Food Bank

The establishment of a food bank is a means of alleviating poverty by means of providing food parcels to indigent households. It is therefore intended for persons in such dire material need, that they are unable to meet their or their family’s most elementary needs. It is designed to tide persons and families over the crisis period. There need to be a very strong element of empowerment and development to the families in order for them to actively take steps to improve their situation and to become independent.

CRITERIA FOR BENEFICIARIES:

In order to qualify for a food parcel from the Food Bank, the applicant must comply with one or more of the following conditions:

  •  The members of the household must be 100% unemployed.
  •  The monthly income of the household (combined income of all members) must not be more than R 3 500.00 per month.
  •  The application for a food parcel will be informed by the volume of the household. (3 people for the specified income.)
  •  The applicant has been affected by a disaster, and the specific area has not yet been declared a disaster area (point 1 and 2 automatically waived)
  •  The applicant is not receiving assistance from any other organization.
  •  The breadwinner is deceased and insufficient means available.
  •  The applicant acts as a place of safety for children in need of care and has not yet received place of safety allowance.
  •  The applicant is not a member of a household that is already receiving assistance e.g.(on ART receiving Food Parcel from funded HCBC site)

Beneficiary is or has not received a social relief of distress voucher from SASSA at a time of application.
